Teal Deer 001: The Malphas Theory and the Origins of Claude Faustus

Best read while listening to Sis Puella Magica for some reason.

It's a given fact that charges name their demons upon the contract being formed. Or rather, the demon's name while under contract is dictated by the human. So what of the demon's previous identity?

There have been fanfic I've seen where authors choose to gloss over Sebastian's demonic name. While this may be true in the sense that it could be unpronounceable to human lips, I've always been rather curious as to his possible rank and file. Or if he could be any known demon. Does Yana know about basic demonology at the least? We can pretty much infer that it's familiar given Sebastian's name to begin with. In 1612, a French priest with a rather familiar name wrote of a classification of demons. But we'll get to that in a sec.

Now, aside from the Michaelis classification (officially named The Admirable History of Possession and Conversion of a Penitent Woman: Seduced by a Magician that Made Her to Become a Witch. See why I prefer to call them the Michaelis classifications?), we have the Lesser Key of Solomon. This list is said to have been penned by King Solomon himself (though that's pretty much bull considering the terminologies in the text) and notes down 72 demons with their ranks, names and seals as well as methods of summoning them. This is where people get Beelzebul, Baphomet, Lucifuge, Lucifer and the like.

Having done a shitton of research into the field of demonology, I was curious as to looking for parallels between these two butlers and any known demons. Naturally, the first place I turned was to the Lesser Key as these were more likely to contain my answers seeing as the Michaelis heirarchy wrote demons really as fallen angels.

At first, I was thinking of Raum seeing as he was the first demon I came across with the form of a crow but the more I read, the more he didn't seem to fit.

" Raum, or Raim is a great earle, he is seene as a crowe, but when he putteth on humane shape, at the commandement of the exorcist, he stealeth woonderfullie out of the kings house, and carrieth it whether he is assigned, he destroieth cities, and hath great despite unto dignities, he knoweth things present, past, and to come, and reconcileth freends and foes, he was of the order of thrones, and governeth thirtie legions."

Raum here is seen as a magpie: steals riches from the wealthy and brings them to his master, knowing the past, reconciles people. Nothing like Sebastian whatsoever.
Then I found another demon that took the form of a crow: Malphas.

Malphas is a great president, he is seene like a crowe, but being cloathed with humane image, speaketh with a hoarse voice, be buildeth houses and high towres wonderfullie, and quicklie bringeth artificers togither, he throweth downe also the enimies edifications, he helpeth to good familiars, he receiveth sacrifices willinglie, but he deceiveth all the sacrificers, there obeie him fourtie legions

Malphas is a little closer to home. He can manage to build towers (restore manors? Yes? Sit with me.) and is known to be able to reveal the intentions of his masters' enemies. Also, did I mention he's good at finding one helpers? But the one thing that struck me was that last bit: he takes sacrifices graciously but in the end, he deceives them. Unfortunately, only time can tell if that last bit comes true for me.

So I may have found a pinpoint for Sebastian... but what about Claude?

Now this may come as a surprise but... I don't think Claude is a high-ranking demon at all. Again, I point parallels between him and Sebastian. (This is where my overanalyzing gets worse. Bear with me, people)

So we see that to have summoned Sebastian, a glut of things were needed: a human sacrifice, the entire rituale romanum and rites and the like. For Claude, there was near nothing. Just a child's whim and a dream, yes? Apart from the summoning chant which Seb didn't really seem to need. My theory is he's always been around there. One of those lesser nature-based demons. His demonic form (and this isn't even certain if this is his true form) seems to be that of a giant spider covered with that miasma of darkness and that creepy face thing. Compared to Sebastian's bipedal form, this seems more primal. Lesser and more animal in nature.

I can't say for certain just what sort of spider demon he is as there really doesn't seem to be any demon from the Goetia which seems to pertain to one that has that form for some reason.

Course, this'll take more research. Dream walking spider demons aren't really a dime a dozen, yknow.
